Hey Techies! In case you may have missed this week’s Newsletters, here is a recap:

Cybereducation101 Newsletter Recap Week of June 9

Cruise line Royal Caribbean generic icon

Earlier last month, a news headline circulated of a cybersecurity officer compromising the security of guests, some underage, and their privacy while in a cruise ship bathroom. The reason for such a gross infraction is beyond understanding. The fact that it took place at all is all that matters. The culprit, #JeremyFroias, has been arrested for recording the cruise line guests while they went to the bathroom. A camera was placed by the bathroom door and it picked up on the guests’ private moments. This vile act is unfortunately not a new occurrence and needs to be stopped. A way to determine when these crimes have been committed before too much damage is done may be nearly impossible when they are committed by experts in their fields. However, businesses and individuals should always remain vigilant of any scenes that appear to be out of the ordinary. This is how Jeremy’s act was brought to the proper authorities.

Earlier this year, attackers gained unauthorized access to a portion of Chick-fil-A’s app's database, potentially compromising sensitive details such as names, email addresses, and in some cases, payment card information. The breach affects a significant number of Chick-fil-A app users and highlights the ongoing challenges organizations face in protecting customer data.

Unauthorized access to personal information can lead to identity theft, phishing attacks, and other malicious activities. It is essential to remain vigilant and be cautious of any suspicious communications or transactions related to your Chick-fil-A app account. This consideration is important for all mobile apps as data breaches are so common through the simplest of applications.

Activision, parent company to the illustrious video game Black Ops, experienced a data breach in December 2022. A phishing attack on an employee jeopardized the personal information of many employees and the company as well. Activision waited until early 2023 to announce the data breach and this leads to concern of when companies are obligated to announce breaches of any size to their employees and the public. Not knowing that your data was potentially compromised could definitely lead to further breaches down the road, essentially causing more harm than good.

T-Mobile logo corporate building labeled icon

Their 2nd data breach so far in 2023, and 8th data breach since 2018…T-Mobile has been under scrutiny for their data being compromised so often over the past few years. As of this year specifically, Cybercriminals gained unauthorized access to a portion of T-Mobile's systems, potentially compromising sensitive user data, including names, addresses, phone numbers, and in some cases, even Social Security numbers. The scale of this breach highlights the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and the need for continuous vigilance in safeguarding personal information.
