Did you hear about the cyber-attack on DISH network in February 2023? This attack has deeply affected the company and created fears of data security for multiple customers, understandably. In February 2023, an SEC filing was made to report the cyber-attack on DISH network that lasted for multiple days. DISH operates computer systems on TVs and mobile phones for their millions of consumers. DISH, Sling TV, and Boost Mobile are all operated under the DISH network and may sound familiar to many people, even those who don’t use DISH services for themselves. During this cyber-attack, companywide systems were down, including customer service. Once the cyber-attack news became known to the public, it was noted that hackers may have gained access to millions of customers’ data. Millions. How much data was stolen? Can the security infrastructure be restored? With the attempt to leave a security scandal behind and look for a more secure provider, no doubt, a percentage of DISH’s customers, several thousands, decided to leave the network. Not too long after their exit, DISH’s stock price fell tremendously, affecting the company financially. 

Cyber-attacks can cause enough damage when they affect one individual. Imagine the amount of damage they can cause when they affect an entire company. When a company is affected, several individuals are affected as a result. Some cyber-attacks are difficult to detect and may not be determined until well after damage has already been done. Identifying the data breach is important in cybersecurity because it offers the chance to mitigate further disclosure of confidential information. Without determining whether a data breach has occurred in the first place, excess havoc could occur and lead to heightened losses for both the company and its consumers. Early detection of a cyber-attack could be the difference between losing some customers and having to scrap the entire company because of financial hardship. Take your pick.
