Reddit ransomware data breach 2023
We've got some breaking news about a recent data breach that might affect one of your favorite online platforms, Reddit. π΅οΈββοΈ Hackers from the BlackCat ransomware group, also known as ALPHV, claim to have sneaked into Reddit's systems in February and swiped around 80 gigabytes of secret stuff. π±
These crafty hackers posted on the dark web, kind of like the hidden side of the internet, that they wanted a cool $4.5 million to keep quiet about the stolen data. But guess what? Reddit didn't listen, and they even wanted the platform to change a new rule they didn't like.
You see, Reddit was planning to charge some apps to use its platform. Some users got mad about it and protested by making over 6,000 forums disappear. They wanted Reddit to stop their plan and make the forums come back.
Back to our sneaky hackers. Even though they seem to be supporting the protestors, experts say they might just want to scare others into paying them. These hackers just want to show how much trouble they can cause to force people to pay them money.
Reddit says, "Don't worry, your personal info is safe." But they admit that these hackers got their hands on some inside stuff like documents and computer codes. Luckily, only employee data got nabbed.
So what's next? It's a bit of a digital showdown. The hackers say they're going to leak the data since they don't think Reddit will pay up. Will Reddit stand up to them or will they give in to their demands? π€
Remember, cybersecurity is like keeping your online stuff safe from digital sneaky folks. So, keep an eye out for any unusual stuff and maybe even change your passwords if you're feeling extra cautious.
Stay safe and keep exploring the digital world wisely! ππ
